Soybeans may be processed several ways. The most common is the hexane (chemical) extraction method. Then there is the mechanical method that is used by SoySoft. This process uses no chemicals.
HEXANE EXTRACTION
The “new process” of chemical extraction involves soaking soybeans in hexane (two carbon chains different than gasoline) which causes the oil and meal to separate. After the separation takes place, they try to remove the residual hexane. The soy oil is then degummed, a process that removes lecithin and other tocopherols. Next the oil is heated to a high temperature to deodorize it, however this process which is performed to make it odorless also removed the vitamin E, tocopherols and other antioxidants. At this point an artificial preservative is added, as it will become rancid without its natural antioxidants. (If you look at a bottle of soy cooking oil, it instructs you to refrigerate after opening.)
MECHANICAL METHOD
SoySoft only uses virgin (unrefined) soy lipids, removed from organic soybeans by a mechanical process. Virgin soy lipids contain high levels of natural vitamin E, lecithin (which helps maintain the elasticity of the skin), essential fatty acids, mixed tocopherols and other antioxidants. Natural vitamin E from soy lipids is 150% more potent than synthetic vitamin E. Natural vitamin E is a d-tocopherol and synthesized vitamin E is listed as dl-tocopherol. (The easy way to differentiate between the two is that “d” is “delicious” and “dl” is “don’t like”.) The vitamin E in our soy lipids contains all four forms of natural vitamin E – alpha, beta, delta, and gamma.
NOT ALL SOY LOTIONS ARE THE SAME
Some lotions that contain soy use soy protein instead of soy lipids. Soy protein does not contain vitamin E, lecithin, essential fatty acids or mixed tocopherols. Without these great nutrients, those lotions are not as effective as SoySoft which contains natural soy lipids rich in vitamin E, essential fatty acids, lecithin and mixed tocopherols.
It is also important to check for the location of soy in the ingredient list. Assuming the ingredients are listed properly from the highest content to the lowest, the closer soy is the beginning, the more soy the lotion contains. Soybean oil is the second ingredient in SoySoft Deep Treatment Penetrating Crème and fourth in the Daily Moisturizing Body Lotion.
There are also some soy lotion bars on the market; these bars are made with hydrogenated soybean oil. Hydrogenization involves the process of exposing soybean oil to hydrogen gas in the presence of heat and a catalyst. This process destroys all the good nutrients in the soybean oil like the vitamin E, lecithin, essential fatty acids, and mixed tocopherols.
